Om Caitlin
Hello!
My name is Nova, and it would be a pleasure to introduce myself! I am an American English teacher currently living here in Denmark. I have a bachelor’s degree in English, and a master’s degree in teaching English as a second language.
Being a teacher has been my dream since I was a child! I’ve spent the past four years following my dream and working with kids in America and South Korea. I’ve taught large classes of up to 20 children at a time, but I’ve found that I really prefer working one-on-one with students so I can give them 100% of my attention and tailor lesson plans to their individual needs. My goal in tutoring sessions is to make students feel comfortable, increase motivation, and get them excited about learning.

I have a proficient understanding of the pedagogy of language learning and second language acquisition, and can create a personal approach to learning based on each individual. Depending on the student's age and needs, I can focus on vocabulary acquisition, literacy, grammar and writing, conversational practice, or a combination of all. For young children, I believe the power of play cannot be understated. Complete language immersion during play can lead to faster language acquisition.
I have the most experience teaching children from age 5 to age 15, and I prefer to tutor this age group. However, I am open to the possibility of tutoring a student of any age if both parties decide it’s a good fit.
Again, lesson plans will be different depending on the needs, age, and proficiency level of the student.
As an example, I'd like to show an hour-long lesson plan focusing on literacy for a student who is around 8 years old at reading level B.
Warm Up 10 minutes
Purpose: Wake up the brain and get the student talking and comfortable.
Instructions: Talk about student’s week and think of some words that have the long A sound.
Phonics Sort - 10 minutes
Purpose: Help student recognize phonetic rules so they can predict the pronunciation of unknown words.
Instructions: Sort long A and short A words and pictures into categories. Make sure to have the student say all the words out loud while they sort.
Vocabulary Game - 10 minutes
Purpose: to review book vocabulary in a fun and engaging way.
Instructions: Put cupcake liners with vocabulary words in the muffin tin. Have the student stand back and throw pom pom balls towards the tin. When they throw one in a liner, have them read the word and put the liner to the side.
Reading - 15 minutes
Purpose: Practice reading and sounding out unknown words.
Material: “Let’s Make Cookies” book level B
Instructions: I’ll read the book through once and then have the student read it. (This depends on how many times we’ve worked on this book. I may not read it myself depending on the circumstance.)
Writing - 15 minutes
Purpose: Practice comprehension skills and apply text concepts to other situations.
Instructions: Fold the colored paper into a book and work on writing a simple recipe for the student’s favorite treat.
Ex: “Let’s make a cake! First, you mix the flour and sugar. Next, you add eggs and milk. Last, you put the cake in the oven.”
