Om Mara
Salut! My name is Mara and I am a native French speaker from Belgium who has been living in Copenhagen for the past two and a half years.
I grew up learning and speaking both French and English, so I am fully bilingual. Having always moved between the two languages, I know the feeling of having to “switch your brain” from one language to another, and how frustrating it can sometimes be when you know exactly what you want to say, but the words just don’t come naturally in the other language!
While I encourage you to use as much French as possible, I can easily switch to English when something needs a clearer explanation. I can help you understand the differences between how something might naturally be expressed in English and in French, rather than relying only on direct translations.
Having lived in Copenhagen for the past two and a half years, I have also had plenty of exposure to Danish culture and the Danish language. I know first-hand what it feels like to navigate everyday life in a language that isn’t your own, and it has made me even more aware of how differently languages work. For students coming from a Danish-speaking background, this also means I am familiar with some of the linguistic and cultural differences you may encounter when approaching French.
As someone who grew up speaking French, I would love to share not only the language itself, but also the natural, everyday French that you don’t always find in textbooks. French has a reputation for being complicated, so my goal is to make it feel much more approachable and create the kind of environment where you feel comfortable actually speaking French, even when it isn’t perfect yet. All mistakes and questions are welcome!
I am naturally dynamic and creative, and I bring that into the way I teach. I take a thoughtful and professional approach to each student while keeping our lessons relaxed and personal. I believe that learning a language shouldn’t feel intimidating, and doesn't necessarily have to happen between four walls.
I particularly enjoy working with adults who want to become more comfortable using the language. Whether you’re starting from zero, improving the French you already know, learning for work or travel, or simply looking for someone to regularly practice conversation with, we’ll start from your level and build from there.

I believe the best way to learn a language is to actually use it! My lessons are centered around conversation and creating a relaxed environment where you can feel comfortable speaking French, making mistakes, asking questions and learning naturally.
I am very aware that French can be a complicated language, so rather than following one strict teaching method, I prefer to figure out what works best for each student. Everyone learns differently, and I will adapt our lessons to your level, goals, interests and preferred way of learning.
And learning doesn’t necessarily have to mean sitting in the same room for an hour! I like my lessons to be dynamic and, when it suits the student, we can take French into the real world. We can go for a walk and practice conversation, sit in a café, or create little everyday situations around what you actually want to learn. If your goal is to feel comfortable ordering a coffee in French, for example, why not practice in a café rather than only reading about it from a textbook?
A typical lesson can therefore look very different from one student to another. We can combine conversation with vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, reading and writing, or focus on practical situations and subjects that genuinely interest you. The idea is to make French something you actively use rather than simply memorize.
I also like to include recommendations for books, movies, music, etc with the goal of getting your ear used to hearing french as well as then having different conversation topics for our next lessons.
As a native French speaker from Belgium, I can also help you with the everyday French you’ll actually hear in real conversations, alongside more traditional French when needed.
My lessons are primarily aimed at young adults and adults, from complete beginners to more experienced French speakers. Whether you’re learning for work, studies, travel, personal reasons, or simply want to become more confident speaking French, we can build the lessons around you and your goals.
